The Government of the Dominican Republic engaged us to reimagine the Teatro Agua y Luz and its surrounding site as a new cultural destination for the nation. The open-air theater has long served as a platform for Dominican culture and its globally iconic art forms, Merengue and Bachata. The masterplan positions the site as a cultural anchor and renewed civic center on the Malecon waterfront: the restored theater at its heart, upgraded to a world-class venue with a retractable roof, surrounded by a piazza carrying approximately 20,000 square meters of cultural program, 6,500 square meters of offices, and 3,000 square meters of retail. A civic-scale canopy frames the theater like a cultural artifact, shades the public spaces, and reconnects the site to the city and the ocean.
